A legal battle is heating up in Albany, California, after the city removed a cross that has stood as a symbol of hope and love for over 50 years. The city of Albany, claiming eminent domain and pressured by a group of atheists, took down the cross earlier this year on June 8, now, the city is facing legal challenges as the Albany Lions Club is challenging the decision in court.
The cross was placed on Albany Hill in the ’70s. When the land was sold, an easement was included in the sale so the Lions Club could continue maintaining the site, and the cross could stay on the property, even though it eventually became part of a public park. Now attorneys for both parties are in U.S. District Court this week in San Francisco in a legal battle. The land has been used for over 50 years by worshippers seeking solitude and prayer.
