Now Catholic leaders are speaking up and speaking out with a prayer and worship meeting planned today at Dodger Stadium. Catholic leaders are calling the award for Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, blasphemy. “Friday, we celebrate the feast of Jesus’ Sacred Heart,” Los Angeles Archbishop José Gomez said in a statement.
“We will be praying in a special way for our city and country, for an end to prejudice, and for renewed respect for the religious beliefs of all Angelenos and all Americans.”Other faith-based groups have organized a Prayerful Procession at Dodger Stadium starting Friday, 6/16, from 3 pm-7 pm, including prayer, worship, music, and speakers. The procession has been branded as “Christians unite in prayerful response to Dodgers’ godless decision to honor, blasphemous, Christ-mocking, “Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.”
The Dodgers initially announced the invitation to Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence and faced backlash, including a letter from Florida Senator Marco Rubio. The Dodgers changed their minds and rescinded the invitation. However, they changed their stance again and reoffered the invitation a few days later in May for tonight’s game. Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw announced the relaunch of Christian Faith & Family Day shortly after, tweeting, “Excited to announce the relaunch of Christian Faith and Family Day at Dodger Stadium on July 30th. More details to come— but we are grateful for the opportunity to talk about Jesus and determined to make it bigger and better than it was before COVID. Hope to see you on July 30th!”
