President Urges Iran to Negotiate as Israel’s Strikes Escalate Middle East Tensions
In response to Israel’s strikes against Iran, President Donald Trump issued a stern ultimatum to Iran following Israel’s preemptive military strikes on Iranian nuclear and military targets. The strikes, which Israel dubbed “Operation Rising Lion,” targeted key nuclear facilities, including the Natanz uranium enrichment site, and resulted in the deaths of several high-ranking Iranian officials, including Major General Hossein Salami, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Major General Mohammad Bagheri, chief of staff of Iran’s armed forces, Major General Gholam Ali Rashid, head of Khatam-al Anbiya Headquarters, and Amir Ali Hajizadeh, head of the IRGC’s Aerospace Forces. Additionally, Ali Shamkhani, a key adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was critically injured and later died.
In his Truth Social post, Trump emphasized the urgency for Iran to negotiate a nuclear deal, warning of even more severe consequences if they fail to comply. He wrote, “I gave Iran chance after chance to make a deal… There has already been great death and destruction, but there is still time to make this slaughter, with the next already planned attacks being even more brutal, come to an end. Iran must make a deal, before there is nothing left, and save what was once known as the Iranian Empire. No more death, no more destruction, JUST DO IT, BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE.”
The strikes, which began in the early hours of June 13, were described by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a necessary response to Iran’s advancing nuclear program, which Israel views as an existential threat. Iranian state media reported significant damage to military and nuclear infrastructure, with explosions rocking Tehran and other cities. Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, vowed “severe punishment” in response, while President Masoud Pezeshkian called for national unity and promised a decisive counteraction.
Trump’s Diplomatic Push and Ultimatum
Trump’s post referenced a 60-day ultimatum he issued two months prior, urging Iran to reach a nuclear agreement. “Two months ago I gave Iran a 60-day ultimatum to ‘make a deal.’ They should have done it! Today is day 61. Now they have, perhaps, a second chance!” he stated. This follows reports from March 2025, when Trump sent a letter to Khamenei via the United Arab Emirates, proposing negotiations but setting a firm two-month deadline. The letter was described as “tough,” ruling out open-ended talks and threatening consequences if Iran continued its nuclear pursuits.
Despite earlier diplomatic efforts, including U.S.-Iran talks in Oman and a planned meeting in Rome, Israel’s strikes have thrown these negotiations into jeopardy. Trump’s administration had previously rebuffed Israeli proposals for joint military action, favoring diplomacy to avoid a broader conflict. However, the latest developments suggest a shift, with Trump warning of further Israeli attacks if Iran does not comply.
Commentators Weigh In
Conservative commentator Larry Elder reacted online to support Israel’s actions, stating, “Israel’s preemptive attack against Iran’s nuclear program was inevitable. When an enemy calls for your destruction while steadily working to become a nuclear power, you have limited options. Ignore the enemy and hope for the best. Or, take action to eliminate the threat.” Elder’s remarks reflect a sentiment among some U.S. conservatives who view Iran’s nuclear ambitions as a direct threat to Israel and global stability.
Pastor Greg Laurie of Harvest Christian Fellowship shared a call to prayer and discernment in these perilous times. “This is a very serious matter, and Bible students should be paying close attention. The regime in Iran has long supported terrorism around the world—especially against Israel. They have been developing a nuclear weapon for some time now, and their leaders have repeatedly threatened to use it to “wipe Israel off the face of the Earth. We must be in prayer, and we must walk closely with the Lord. These are perilous times, and we need spiritual discernment, courage, and faith more than ever.”
Global Reactions and Regional Implications
The international community has reacted with alarm to the escalating conflict. UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned military escalation in the Middle East, expressing particular concern over attacks on nuclear installations while diplomatic talks were underway. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio clarified that U.S. forces were not involved in the strikes but urged Iran to refrain from targeting American interests. Meanwhile, Senators Lindsey Graham and Ted Cruz voiced strong support for Israel, with Graham calling the strikes “one of the most impressive military strikes in Israeli history.”
Iran has promised a “decisive and proportional” response, with reports of over 100 drones launched toward Israel, most of which were intercepted. The closure of Israeli airspace and a state of emergency underscore the heightened tensions. Global markets have also been rattled, with oil prices surging nearly 12% in response to the strikes.
Trump’s push for a nuclear deal reflects his broader goal of avoiding a full-scale war in the Middle East, a key promise of his 2024 campaign. However, Israel’s actions and Iran’s vowed retaliation complicate these efforts.
