Hezbollah And Iran Escalate Attacks On Israel, Deploying Banned Cluster Munitions And Targeting Civilians In Coordinated Strikes
TEL AVIV — Israel faced a sharp escalation Tuesday as Hezbollah and Iran reportedly coordinated strikes, deploying cluster munitions that overwhelmed air defenses and targeted civilian areas. The attacks mark a significant intensification in the ongoing U.S.-Israeli campaign against Iranian interests, now in its 11th day.
Senior Israeli security analyst Kobi Michael said Hezbollah’s actions appear closely aligned with Iran’s missile launches. “Most of Hezbollah’s rockets and drones are launched simultaneously with the Iranian missiles,” he told reporters, noting the attacks are deliberately targeting civilian areas and critical infrastructure.
Cluster munitions, banned by more than 120 nations for their indiscriminate effects, scatter dozens of bomblets over wide areas and pose a grave threat to civilians. Michael warned that these weapons must be treated as non-conventional, requiring a measured response from Israel and its allies.
Hezbollah appears to be applying lessons from previous conflicts with Israel, operating in small, agile units and limiting use of communication devices to avoid detection. Israeli authorities report heavy bombardment in northern regions, including areas near Haifa, while civilians spend much of their time in bomb shelters.
In response, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched airstrikes on Hezbollah positions in Beirut’s southern suburbs, urging residents to evacuate. Much of Hezbollah’s activity is concentrated near Khiyam, close to the borders with Israel and Syria, where elite Radwan fighters have returned in anticipation of possible ground incursions.
Michael said Israel may need to establish a security buffer zone in southern Lebanon to prevent further attacks, indicating that the conflict could intensify across Lebanon as the campaign continues.
The continued deployment of cluster munitions and deliberate attacks on civilians highlight the growing dangers of the conflict in the region, raising global concern over the humanitarian and strategic consequences of Iran-backed actions.
