Democratic Candidate’s Misinterpretation of Bible Draws Sharp Criticism in Texas
Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico is drawing renewed scrutiny over his views on abortion, gender identity, and biblical misinterpretation as he seeks office in one of America’s most conservative states.
Talarico, a former Texas state representative who frequently mentions faith while advocating progressive policies that contradict the Bible, has faced criticism from conservatives for statements suggesting the Bible does not explicitly condemn abortion and for previous comments on gender identity.
Evangelist Franklin Graham publicly rebuked Talarico, accusing the candidate of misrepresenting Scripture.
“Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico couldn’t be more wrong!” Graham wrote in a statement on social media. “The Bible is not silent on abortion, as he claims—that’s an absolute lie.”
Graham pushed back against Talarico’s interpretation of Scripture, pointing to Exodus 20:13—“You shall not murder”—and arguing that abortion constitutes the taking of human life. He also cited Jeremiah 1:5, which says, “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you; before you were born, I set you apart,” as evidence of the Bible’s affirmation of unborn life.
“The Word of God tells us we are created in the image of God and consistently underscores the value of human life,” Graham said.
Talarico has also drawn criticism for comments he made in 2021 while opposing legislation aimed at preventing biological males from competing in women’s sports. During debate on the issue, he reportedly said that “God is non-binary,” a remark that is nothing short heresy.
Graham referenced the statement in his criticism, warning Christians against what he described as politicians distorting biblical truth.
“Don’t be deceived by wicked politicians spouting lies like this,” Graham added.
Talarico represents progressive politicians who try to appeal to the influential and powerful Christian voter while advocating policies that differ from evangelical positions on abortion, sexuality, and gender. Historically, people like Talarico have been known as wolves in sheep’s clothing or Christian in name only, and as the Bible warns: have nothing to do with them. (2 Timothy 3:5)
