Missouri AG Targets Planned Parenthood for Alleged False Claims About Abortion Pill Safety
JEFFERSON CITY, MO – Missouri has launched a lawsuit against Planned Parenthood, accusing the organization of misleading women about the safety of the abortion pill Mifepristone and violating the state’s consumer protection laws.
According to the lawsuit, Planned Parenthood’s website claims chemical abortion is “very safe,” even “safer than Tylenol.” However, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warning label for Mifepristone, dispensed under the Mifeprex label, states that 4.6% of women require emergency medical attention after using the drug. Recent studies cited in the lawsuit suggest this figure may be as high as 10.9% after a single dose.
Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey stated, “The lies must stop. Planned Parenthood has systematically misled women about the dangers of chemical abortions to cut costs and increase revenue at the expense of women’s health and safety.” Bailey called the comparison of Mifepristone to Tylenol “disingenuous” and “illegal,” arguing it violates the Missouri Merchandising Practices Act, which prohibits deceptive advertising.
“No one is above the law, not even Planned Parenthood,” Bailey declared. “We’re holding the national Planned Parenthood entity accountable for the lies it tells women in Missouri and across the nation.”
The lawsuit seeks:
- -Over $1.8 million in civil penalties for daily violations of Missouri law.
- -Up to $1,000 in damages or restitution for each Missouri woman who received abortion pills from Planned Parenthood in the past five years.
- -Reimbursement for Medicaid and other taxpayer-funded emergency care related to abortion pill complications.
- -A court order to stop Planned Parenthood Federation of America from promoting these claims in Missouri.
In March, Bailey issued a cease-and-desist order to Planned Parenthood, prohibiting chemical abortions in Missouri due to the organization’s alleged disregard for state health and safety laws. Despite this, Missouri voters approved a constitutional amendment in November 2024, establishing abortion as a constitutional right and nullifying the state’s near-total abortion ban.
Mat Staver, Founder and Chairman of Liberty Counsel, commented, “Comparing chemical abortion drugs to Tylenol is offensive and deceptive. Chemical abortions harm women physically and emotionally and cruelly kill defenseless children in the womb. The abortion industry prioritizes its agenda over the lives of unborn children and the health of their mothers.”
