The resurgence of Christianity in contemporary culture has found a powerful voice in music, with artists like Forrest Frank leading the charge. The Grammy-nominated Christian artist recently released his new single, “God’s Got My Back,” a testament to faith and resilience, just days after a skateboarding accident left him with multiple spinal fractures. This release not only highlights Frank’s personal journey but also underscores the broader rise and growth of Christianity in modern entertainment, particularly through music that resonates with younger audiences.

Christianity’s Growing Influence in Music

Contemporary Christian music (CCM) is experiencing a breakthrough moment, moving beyond its traditional boundaries to capture mainstream attention. Artists like Forrest Frank and Brandon Lake are at the forefront, with their songs charting on the Billboard Hot 100—a rare feat for faith-based music. Frank’s hit “Your Way’s Better” has been a fixture on the chart for weeks, marking one of the first times in over a decade that two CCM songs have simultaneously reached this level of mainstream success. This crossover appeal signals a cultural shift, as Christian music’s messages of hope, redemption, and faith resonate with a generation grappling with challenges like depression and uncertainty. As Holly Zabka, president of Provident, a Sony subsidiary dedicated to Christian music, noted, “This is the most exciting time to be in Christian music,” with the genre experiencing a 60% growth rate globally on Spotify over five years.

The rise of Christianity in music is not just about chart performance but also about authenticity. Frank, a former member of the secular surf-pop duo Surfaces, transitioned to Christian music to create songs that reflect his faith and connect with listeners seeking meaning. His approach—blending hip-hop, pop, and rock with faith-driven lyrics—has challenged the perception that Christian music is “boring” or “corny.” With 4.1 million social media followers and viral hits like “Good Day” and “No Longer Bound,” Frank’s music speaks unapologetically about Jesus, resonating particularly with Gen-Z Christians. His success, including a 2024 GMA Dove Award for New Artist of the Year and a Grammy nomination for his album Child of God, reflects a growing appetite for music that combines spiritual depth with modern, relatable sounds.

Forrest Frank’s Resilience and “God’s Got My Back”

Forrest Frank’s latest chapter is a powerful example of faith in action. On July 19, the 30-year-old artist suffered a serious skateboarding accident while spending time with his 2-year-old son, Bodie, near their Houston-area home. Security footage captured the moment Frank fell, fracturing his L3 and L4 vertebrae after landing hard on a sidewalk. The injury left him bedridden, facing excruciating pain with even the simplest movements. Yet, instead of succumbing to despair, Frank turned to his faith and creativity, composing “God’s Got My Back” from his hospital bed in just two hours.

The song, released on July 25, is a raw and uplifting anthem of trust in God’s provision. Its lyrics—“God’s got my back/ Even when I fall or get attacked/ God’s got my back/ Even when I’m low and full of lack/ God’s got my back/ Even when my soul is full of sorrow/ I don’t have to worry about tomorrow”—reflect Frank’s unwavering belief in divine support amid personal trials. The track went viral, amassing nearly 30 million views and over 15,000 user-generated content posts on social media within three days, with Frank noting that “God is clearly breathing on this one.” Fellow Christian artists like Lecrae and Colton Dixon praised the song, with Lecrae calling it “dope” and Dixon marveling at Frank’s “no excuses” attitude.

Frank’s response to adversity mirrors the resilience found in his earlier work. His breakout single “Good Day,” written after what he described as the “hardest day” of his life, similarly transformed personal struggle into a message of hope. This pattern of turning pain into praise aligns with the broader Christian narrative of finding strength through faith, a message that resonates deeply in today’s culture.

A Broader Movement of Faith

Frank’s story and music are part of a larger movement where Christianity is gaining visibility in entertainment. The success of artists like Frank, who leverage social media to share their faith, reflects a shift toward values-driven content. His music, created using Logic Pro on a MacBook, blends genres to appeal to diverse audiences, with 16.3% of his listenership in Brazil, prompting him to engage fans in Portuguese. This global reach highlights Christianity’s universal appeal, as artists like Frank use platforms like TikTok and Instagram to connect with millions.

Moreover, the rise of CCM coincides with a cultural hunger for meaning. As Zabka noted, young listeners are drawn to Christian music’s focus on hope and redemption, offering an alternative to the despair often found in secular music. Frank’s own journey—from a secular artist with Surfaces to a worship leader whose album Child of God II debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart—illustrates this shift. His testimony, shared in songs like “Testimony” from Child of God II, details his transformation after finding a deeper relationship with Jesus during his college years at Baylor University.

Forrest Frank’s “God’s Got My Back” is more than a song; it’s a reflection of Christianity’s growing influence and the power of faith to transform suffering into hope. As Christian music continues to break into the mainstream, artists like Frank are proving that faith-based messages can resonate widely, offering inspiration to a generation seeking purpose. Despite his physical pain, Frank’s ability to create a viral, God-glorifying anthem from a hospital bed underscores the enduring strength of Christian faith—a faith that not only sustains individuals like Frank but also fuels a cultural movement.
