Senator Josh Hawley’s In God We Trust Act Seeks to Etch National Motto on Federal Buildings by 2026
Washington, D.C. – In a move to reaffirm America’s religious heritage, U.S. Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) has introduced legislation mandating the display of the national motto “In God We Trust” on all federal buildings nationwide. The bill, dubbed the In God We Trust Act, aligns with President Donald Trump’s newly launched “America Prays” initiative, signaling a renewed emphasis on faith in public life as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary in 2026.
The legislation targets the General Services Administration (GSA), requiring it to prominently inscribe or display the motto on every federal building within one year of the bill’s passage. This comes at a time when America is experiencing a significant spiritual awakening, led in part by President Trump’s push for our nation to come back to God, with Hawley positioning the measure at perhaps the best time in history with faith and belief in Jesus Christ at an all-time high among Gen Z and others.
“Our national motto goes all the way back to the days of President Lincoln. Congress adopted ‘In God We Trust’ as our national motto in 1956 during the rise of atheist communism, and it remains our national motto today,” said Senator Hawley. “The In God We Trust Act will ensure that the federal government—as well as the American people for whom it works—never forgets the ultimate source of the liberty and prosperity this country enjoys. As the United States prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday, this bill would restore faith to its rightful place in the halls of government.”
Hawley’s push echoes themes from his earlier public addresses. In a 2024 speech at the National Conservatism Conference, he first floated the idea, stating it was time to “take the trans flags down from our public buildings and inscribe instead, on every building owned or operated by the federal government, our national motto: In God We Trust.” That speech drew applause from conservative audiences but criticism from progressive groups.
The full text of the In God We Trust Act is available here, outlining the GSA’s responsibilities and timelines for implementation. If enacted, the law would mark a return to our nation’s founding principle – relationship with God and fresh look on courthouses, offices, and monuments across the country.
This story will be updated as the legislation progresses.
