Renowned Psychologist, Broadcaster, and Defender Of Biblical Family Values Leaves Behind A Lasting Legacy Of Faith And Cultural Influence
Dr. James C. Dobson, one of the most influential Christian voices of the last half-century and a tireless defender of the family, passed away today at the age of 89.
A psychologist, New York Times best-selling author, Radio Hall of Fame broadcaster, and trusted advisor to five U.S. presidents, Dr. Dobson dedicated his life to strengthening marriages, guiding parents, and upholding biblical values in American life.
“Dr. Dobson was a pioneer—a man of deep conviction whose voice shaped the way generations view faith, family and culture,” said Gary Bauer, Senior Vice President of Public Policy at the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute. “His bold leadership, integrity, and compassion helped equip countless families to thrive in a world of shifting values. He was a mentor, a counselor, and a steady voice of truth in turbulent times.”
A Life of Influence
Born in 1936 in Shreveport, Louisiana, Dr. Dobson rose to national prominence in 1977 when he founded Focus on the Family, which grew into one of the world’s largest faith-based organizations. His daily broadcasts reached more than 4,000 radio stations across North America, translated into 27 languages, and aired in over 160 countries.
After leaving Focus on the Family in 2010, Dr. Dobson established the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute (JDFI) and launched Family Talk, a nationally syndicated radio program that continues to reach hundreds of thousands of listeners every week.
Throughout his career, he authored over 70 books on parenting, marriage, and Christian living. Titles such as The New Dare to Discipline, The New Strong-Willed Child, Bringing Up Boys, Bringing Up Girls, Love Must Be Tough, and When God Doesn’t Make Sense remain staples in Christian households around the world.
Shaping Policy and Culture
Dr. Dobson’s influence extended beyond the airwaves and bookshelves. He was a frequent presence in Washington, D.C., advising multiple U.S. administrations on matters of family policy, juvenile justice, and child welfare.
Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush appointed him to national commissions, and he later served on President Donald Trump’s Evangelical Executive Advisory Board. He was a leading voice in cultural debates over pornography, gambling, teen pregnancy, and the sanctity of life.
Legacy of Faith and Family
For millions, Dr. Dobson’s enduring legacy was not simply in shaping policy, but in offering practical, biblical wisdom for everyday family life. His counsel gave hope to parents, encouragement to struggling marriages, and clarity to believers navigating cultural change.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Shirley; their children, Danae and Ryan; daughter-in-law Laura; and two grandchildren.
Though his earthly voice has been silenced, Dr. Dobson’s impact continues through the lives he touched, the families he strengthened, and the faith he boldly proclaimed.
