What Scripture Reveals About The Coming Deceiver—And Why His End Is Already Written
For centuries, Christians and seekers alike have wondered who the Antichrist will be and when he will appear. While speculation can run wild, Scripture gives us clear indicators to look for. Here are seven things the Bible tells us about this figure of ultimate deception.
1. He Will Oppose Christ
The very name “Antichrist” means “against Christ.” Scripture tells us in 1 John 2:18 that “many antichrists have come,” but there is one final Antichrist who will rise in open opposition to Jesus.
1 John 2:18
“Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour.”
2. He Will Deceive the Nations
The Antichrist won’t come wearing a name tag. Instead, 2 Thessalonians 2:9-10 says he will use “all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders” to deceive people. His greatest weapon will be deception.
2 Thessalonians 2:9–10
“The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie, and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.”
3. He Will Demand Worship
Revelation 13 paints a chilling picture: the Antichrist will exalt himself and demand worship from the world. This false messiah will attempt to take the glory that belongs only to God.
Revelation 13:7–8
“It was given power to wage war against God’s holy people and to conquer them. And it was given authority over every tribe, people, language, and nation. All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast—all whose names have not been written in the Lamb’s book of life, the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world.”
4. He Will Persecute Believers
The Antichrist isn’t just about deception—he will also unleash persecution. Daniel 7:25 says he will “wear out the saints of the Most High,” seeking to destroy the faithful who resist him.
Daniel 7:25
“He will speak against the Most High and oppress his holy people and try to change the set times and the laws. The holy people will be delivered into his hands for a time, times and half a time.”
5. He Will Establish Global Control
From controlling commerce to political power, Revelation 13 says no one will be able to “buy or sell unless he has the mark.” The Antichrist’s reign won’t just be spiritual—it will be economic and political.
Revelation 13:16–17
“It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name.”
6. He Will Imitate Christ
Satan’s strategy has always been to counterfeit God’s truth. The Antichrist will present himself as a savior figure, offering false peace. 2 Thessalonians 2:4 says he will even set himself up in God’s temple, “proclaiming himself to be God.”
2 Thessalonians 2:4
“He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God.”
7. His End Is Certain
The story doesn’t end with the Antichrist’s rise. The Bible makes it clear that Jesus will defeat him. 2 Thessalonians 2:8 says the Lord will overthrow him “with the breath of His mouth and destroy him by the splendor of His coming.” The Antichrist’s power will be terrifying—but temporary.
2 Thessalonians 2:8
“And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth and destroy by the splendor of his coming.”
👉 Why It Matters Today
While we don’t know when or how the Antichrist will appear, Jesus told us to stay alert and faithful. As deception grows, the best safeguard isn’t fear—it’s staying rooted in God’s Word and anchored in Christ.
