City review is in its initial stages as mayor responds to allegations
Anaheim Mayor Ashleigh Aitken says she will cooperate with a city review following allegations by her chief of staff, Berenice Ballinas, involving discriminatory remarks and conduct.
The allegations were detailed in a confidential letter from Ballinas’ attorney and include claims that Aitken used a racial slur and questioned Ballinas about her perceived sexual orientation. Aitken has asked residents to consider her public record and said she would participate “readily and truthfully” in any process related to the allegations.
Anaheim spokesperson Mike Lyster told the Los Angeles Times that a review is in its initial stages. Councilmember Natalie Meeks has called for an expedited investigation. The allegations have not been established as fact, and the city review is ongoing.
