As the United States prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary, a renewed sense of patriotism is rising across the nation—and it’s being fueled by a return to America’s spiritual roots.

That momentum is finding a powerful expression in A Great Awakening, the new theatrical release from Sight & Sound in partnership with Roadside Attractions. The film debuted nationwide on April 3, 2026, earning an A+ CinemaScore and grossing more than $2 million in its opening weekend, revealing that audiences are hungry for stories that go deeper than politics and into purpose.

A Story for America’s Defining Moment

Timed with the buildup to America’s 250th celebration, A Great Awakening revisits a pivotal but often overlooked truth: the nation’s founding was not just political—it was profoundly spiritual.

Set in the turbulent years before the American Revolution, the film centers on the unlikely friendship between Benjamin Franklin and George Whitefield. One, a printer and intellectual; the other, a fiery preacher whose voice carried across the colonies.

Together, their relationship unfolds against a backdrop of division, uncertainty, and a growing hunger for truth—conditions that feel strikingly familiar today. Crowds gathering by the thousands, hearts stirred by revival, and leaders wrestling with the future of a fragile union.

“The Soul of a Nation”

Director Joshua Enck underscored the deeper message behind the film, especially in light of the historic milestone ahead:

“As we approach America’s 250th anniversary, we’re honored to share this inspiring story of friendship, faith, and courage,” said Joshua Enck, director of A GREAT AWAKENING. “It’s a timely reminder that the soul of a nation is shaped not just by laws, but by the convictions of its people.”

That message is resonating across audiences who are increasingly asking not just where America is going—but what it was founded upon.

Before the Revolution, There Was a Revelation

From its earliest promotion, the film has leaned into a powerful theme: before the Revolution, there was a Revelation.

The Great Awakening—sparked in part by Whitefield’s preaching—united the colonies in a shared moral vision long before they were united politically. It broke down class barriers, challenged complacency, and ignited a sense of personal and collective responsibility.

As one description of the film notes, it captures “a nation on the brink of collapse with divided colonies, restless citizens and a growing hunger for truth.”

That awakening, the film argues, helped prepare the ground for liberty.

Patriotism Rooted in Purpose

As America 250 approaches, there is a noticeable shift happening. Across the country, individuals and families are rediscovering the deeper foundations of freedom: faith, character, and conviction.

A Great Awakening taps directly into that shift, reminding viewers that “true liberty cannot only be written into law – it must be awakened in the hearts of the people.”

This idea—that freedom is sustained internally before it is protected externally—is at the heart of the film’s message and increasingly at the heart of a renewed national conversation.

A Cultural Moment, Not Just a Movie

For Sight & Sound, the film represents a continuation of nearly five decades of storytelling focused on redemption and truth. The appetite for stories that unify and inspire is rising.

“We hope this film allows audiences to witness how ordinary people and an extraordinary God can steer the course of a nation,” said Joshua Enck. “In a moment when the conversation around liberty is once again front and center, this story reminds us that a spiritual awakening helped prepare a nation long before independence was declared.”

The Road to 250

As July 4, 2026, approaches, marking 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, A Great Awakening is arriving at exactly the right time and challenging Americans with the question, “What kind of nation will America be in its next 250 years?”

If history is any guide, the answer may not begin in government halls—but in awakened hearts.
