Debate Starts on National TV About Claims of Christ & Narcissism
A recent exchange on The View is drawing widespread attention after co-host Joy Behar made comments about Jesus that quickly ignited debate both on-air and online.
During a discussion this week, Behar questioned whether Jesus openly declared Himself to be the Messiah, stating: “But Jesus himself did not run around saying, ‘I’m the Messiah. I’m the Messiah.’”
While Jesus did not go around proclaiming his divinity incessantly – Jesus did unequivocally declare that he is indeed the Messiah in numerouse places. Behar’s remarks were immediately challenged by others at the table, leading to a tense and somewhat chaotic back-and-forth. As the discussion escalated, Behar doubled down, adding:
“Jesus was not narcissistic like this guy,” referring to President Trump.
The moment prompted pushback from co-hosts who argued that, according to the New Testament, Jesus did in fact make explicit claims about His identity. One co-host interjected, “When you are the Messiah, it’s not narcissism to say it.”
The debate was ultimately cut short as the panel moved on, with Whoopi Goldberg saying, “I’m going to move this along because this is like—it’s too much for me.”
What Did Jesus Say?
Behar’s remarks gained traction on social media, particularly among Christian viewers who pointed to multiple passages in the Bible where Jesus identifies Himself in divine or messianic terms. For example, in the Gospel of John, John the Baptist points to Jesus as the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Jesus calls himself the “I am” in stating his eternal existence before Abraham. He also declares, “I am the way, the truth, and the life,” and, in other instances, accepts recognition as the Messiah.
So while Joy Behar and others on The View may share their opinions, God’s truth will never be changed, no matter what.
