After Kohberger’s Life Sentence, a Mother Forgives Her Daughter’s Killer Through Christ
After Bryan Kohberger admitted to the brutal killings of four University of Idaho students and received a life sentence without the possibility of parole, one of the victims’ mothers offered a message few expected to hear: forgiveness.
Speaking in court, Xana Kernodle’s mother addressed her daughter’s killer with words rooted in her Christian faith.
“Jesus has allowed me to forgive you for murdering my daughter without you even being sorry. We’re asking for this. This is only possible because He lives in me and is greater than any evil in this world.”
Quoting Scripture, she declared: “For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. I do not fear you or even let you rent space in my head anymore.”
She said that forgiveness has brought her peace and freedom from the trauma inflicted by Kohberger’s actions.
“This forgiveness has released me from any and all evil you have inflicted on me and my family.”
Referencing the plea deal that spared Kohberger from the death penalty, she added:
“It has allowed me to let God deal with you.”
Kohberger’s admission to the 2022 slayings of Xana Kernodle, Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, and Ethan Chapin marked the end of a long and painful legal process. The shocking crime had devastated the college town of Moscow, Idaho, and captured national attention.
Now sentenced to life in prison, Kohberger avoided the death penalty by accepting a deal and confessing to the murders. But in the face of justice served, Kernodle’s mother offered a final word of grace.
“And peace that surpasses all understanding has allowed me to forgive you.”
Her statement has spread widely across social media and news outlets, standing as a powerful witness to the strength that faith in Jesus Christ can offer even in the darkest of times.
