Fantasia Barrino Taylor and Tank lead a gospel-filled holiday drama, with music produced by Kirk Franklin.
Netflix released the official trailer October 16 for Tyler Perry’s The Gospel of Christmas, which premieres on the streaming service November 11.
The film follows Isaac, a struggling pastor played by Durrell “Tank” Babbs, who moves with his wife, Rebecca, played by Fantasia Barrino Taylor, and their family to a troubled New York neighborhood.
After inheriting his family’s church, Isaac faces the challenge of rebuilding the congregation while confronting doubt, temptation and threats to its future. Netflix’s synopsis describes a story centered on faith, prayer and the effort to protect his church, family and community before Christmas.
The ensemble brings together gospel performers including Yolanda Adams, Fred Hammond, Smokie Norful, Jekalyn Carr, the Clark Sisters, CeCe Winans and Shirley Caesar. Kirk Franklin produced the music, according to the film’s publicity announcement.
Perry wrote and directed the movie and produced it alongside Angi Bones and Tony L. Strickland.
The publicity team describes the film as a modern Prodigal Son story. The newly released trailer offers an early look at its combination of family drama and musical performances.
Netflix lists the film as rated TV-PG. The trailer and first-look photographs are available through the company’s public announcement.
