The Smashing Pumpkins frontman told Stryper singer Michael Sweet that he believes in Jesus as his “Lord and Savior.”
Billy Corgan has spoken openly about his Christian faith and his decision to discuss God despite the potential consequences within the music industry.
The Smashing Pumpkins frontman made the comments during the September 23 episode of his podcast, The Magnificent Others, featuring Stryper singer Michael Sweet.
“I’m a Christian as well,” Corgan said. He explained that he had made a personal decision to talk about God in a way that many musicians of his generation do not.
Corgan recalled once describing God as the “third rail of rock and roll,” meaning that openly discussing faith could harm a performer’s career. He said he nevertheless decided to speak honestly about believing in Jesus as his “Lord and Savior.”
“If I can’t be willing to be honest with who I am, well, what am I asking a fan to believe in?” he said.
Corgan and Sweet also discussed the challenges Christian musicians encounter while working in the broader entertainment industry and questioned why public conversations about God are often treated differently from other personal beliefs.
The remarks do not represent a newly announced conversion. Corgan has discussed his spiritual journey in previous interviews, including a 2013 conversation in which he described God as largely unexplored territory in rock music.
