Legal Battle Surfaces New Accusations of Fraud and Misconduct in Federal Court
What began as a promising partnership between Phil McGraw’s Merit Street Media and Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN), the Christian network has unraveled into dueling lawsuits, each side blaming the other for the collapse of a deal once valued at half a billion dollars.
TBN Accuses McGraw of “Fraudulent Scheme”
In a countersuit filed this week, TBN alleged that McGraw and his production company, Peteski Productions, carried out a “years-long fraudulent scheme” to secure favorable terms at the expense of the Christian broadcaster. Court filings accuse McGraw of fabricating urgency, inflating viewership numbers, and misrepresenting advertising revenue and production costs in order to push through a 2023 agreement.
According to TBN’s legal team, McGraw pressured the network to act immediately, warning that CBS was prepared to pay him $75 million per year to renew his contract. To prove its seriousness, TBN claims it was told it must quickly sign a binding agreement and advance $20 million “as a gesture of good faith.”
A Partnership That Quickly Collapsed
The joint venture officially launched in April 2024, carrying high hopes of creating a new media platform. But the collaboration barely lasted a year. McGraw’s side claimed earlier this summer that TBN undermined the deal by refusing to transfer its must-carry rights, which would have provided Merit Street Media national distribution.
TBN paints a different picture, saying the collapse was fueled by deceptive practices from McGraw himself.
McGraw’s Camp Pushes Back
A spokesperson for McGraw rejected the accusations, calling TBN’s countersuit “riddled with provable lies.” They allege the Christian broadcaster is engaging in “lawfare” to deflect attention from its own failure to uphold contractual obligations.
The outcome of the dispute remains uncertain, but the stakes are high. TBN is now seeking damages, injunctions, and stock amendments through the courts, while McGraw is trying to keep Merit Street Media afloat amid bankruptcy proceedings.
This legal showdown shows how quickly partnerships can unravel when trust breaks down—and how even seasoned figures like Dr. Phil can find themselves entangled in drawn-out battles over money, contracts, and credibility.
