Instead of walking the stage in front of a national television audience and thousands of fans at the 2026 NFL Draft, top overall pick Fernando Mendoza was sitting comfortably on a couch in his childhood home in Coral Gables, Florida — surrounded by his beaming mother and father.
Fernando Mendoza, the former Indiana Hoosiers star who led his team to a national championship and claimed the Heisman Trophy, was selected with the No. 1 overall pick by the Raiders on Thursday night. The reason? His mother, Elsa Mendoza, lives with multiple sclerosis (MS), an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system and has left her reliant on a wheelchair for mobility. Traveling is physically taxing and drains her limited energy, so the family made the loving choice to stay close to home, where she feels most comfortable.
Elsa Mendoza, who was diagnosed with MS in 2008, has long been an inspiration to her son. Fernando has often spoken publicly about how his mother’s strength and faith have shaped him, calling her “the light of my family.”
