From The Great Awakening To Healing, These Men Sparked Spiritual Renewal Across Generations
Revival doesn’t come through politics or programs — it comes through people wholly surrendered to God. From Jonathan Edwards to Oral Roberts, these 11 revivalists helped spark awakenings that changed lives and shaped America’s spiritual foundation.
1. Jonathan Edwards (1703–1758)
Revival: First Great Awakening
Legacy: A theologian whose fiery sermons like “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” lit the flame of revival across New England. His intellectual rigor helped shape American evangelical theology. Edwards’ leadership at Yale and later at Princeton left a lasting academic and spiritual legacy.
Quote: “The way to heaven is ascending; we must be content to travel uphill, though it be hard and tiresome.”
2. George Whitefield (1714–1770)
Revival: First Great Awakening
Legacy: A British evangelist who preached in fields and towns to crowds of thousands, breaking denominational lines and stirring revival across the colonies. He was perhaps the first true “celebrity” preacher in America. His influence united the colonies spiritually long before political independence.
Quote: “You must be born again.”
3. Charles Finney (1792–1875)
Revival: Second Great Awakening
Legacy: A lawyer-turned-evangelist whose innovative and passionate preaching in the “Burned-Over District” led to mass conversions and social reform. He helped usher in the modern revival meeting. Finney also advocated for abolition and women’s rights, showing how revival fuels social change.
Quote: “Revival is nothing else than a new beginning of obedience to God.”
4. D.L. Moody (1837–1899)
Revival: Urban evangelism and missions
Legacy: Founded Moody Bible Institute, held evangelistic campaigns across the U.S. and U.K., and emphasized grace and personal salvation. Moody focused on reaching the common man with simple, powerful messages. His ministry bridged the gap between revival and modern missions.
Quote: “The world has yet to see what God can do with a man fully consecrated to Him.”

5. Billy Sunday (1862–1935)
Revival: Early 20th-century campaigns
Legacy: A showman and preacher who left baseball to save souls — blending showmanship with an uncompromising moral message. Sunday’s energetic preaching style drew massive crowds in an era before sound systems. His influence extended into American politics and helped fuel the Prohibition movement.
Quote: “They tell me that I rub the fur the wrong way. I don’t; let the cat turn around.”

6. Aimee Semple McPherson (1890–1944)
Revival: Healing revivals, Pentecostal movement
Legacy: A pioneer in media evangelism and founder of the Foursquare Church. She packed out auditoriums and used radio to preach the Gospel to millions. McPherson also built a massive church in Los Angeles, challenging norms about women in ministry.
Quote: “We are not fighting for victory — we are fighting from victory!”

7. Billy Graham (1918–2018)
Revival: Global evangelistic crusades
Legacy: Known as “America’s Pastor,” Graham preached the Gospel to over 200 million people and modeled integrity and humility in ministry. He counseled U.S. presidents and world leaders without compromising the Gospel. Graham’s message of salvation by grace through faith united evangelicals across denominations.
Quote: “The cross shows us the seriousness of our sin — but it also shows us the immeasurable love of God.”
8. Leonard Ravenhill (1907–1994)
Revival: Holiness and prayer revival
Legacy: A prophetic voice who called the Church to prayer, brokenness, and eternal urgency. Ravenhill’s book “Why Revival Tarries” became a classic among intercessors and pastors. His mentorship of young leaders, including Keith Green, continued his influence beyond his own lifetime.
Quote: “The opportunity of a lifetime must be seized within the lifetime of the opportunity.”
9. Chuck Smith (1927–2013)
Revival: Jesus Movement
Legacy: Founder of Calvary Chapel, Smith opened the doors of the church to barefoot hippies and birthed a revival that launched thousands of churches. His verse-by-verse Bible teaching helped ground new believers in the Word. Smith’s legacy lives on in a global network of Calvary Chapels.
Quote: “We’re not called to clean the fish before we catch them.”
10. Lonnie Frisbee (1949–1993)
Revival: Jesus People Movement
Legacy: A hippie-turned-evangelist, Frisbee was a key figure in the Jesus Movement, known for powerful encounters with the Holy Spirit despite personal struggles. He operated in a remarkable anointing that led to thousands of salvations. His life remains a story of grace, gifting, and the complexity of revival leadership.
Quote: “God uses nobodies to tell everybody about somebody who can save anybody.”

11. Oral Roberts (1918–2009)
Revival: Healing crusades, televangelism, founding Oral Roberts University
Legacy: Oral Roberts brought Pentecostal healing revivals to national prominence through his large tent meetings and pioneering television broadcasts. He founded Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with a vision of merging faith and academics. His influence reached millions globally and helped shape the landscape of modern charismatic Christianity.
Quote: “Something GOOD is going to happen to you.”
Closing Thought:
From colonial fields to California beaches, these revivalists didn’t wait for permission — they followed the Spirit. Their obedience shaped history, and their stories still challenge the Church today. America’s next Great Awakening may just be one prayer — or one surrendered life — away.
