Crowdfunded Scripture-based film lands in the domestic box-office top 10 during its opening weekend
A new independent biblical epic landed in the top 10 at the North American box office over the weekend.
Daniel and the Fiery Furnace earned an estimated $3.14 million from 1,525 theaters during its Sept. 18–20 opening weekend, finishing No. 7 domestically, according to The Numbers.
The film averaged approximately $2,059 per theater.
Brothers Daniel and Matthew Kooman wrote and directed the film, which stars Mena Massoud, known for Aladdin, as Daniel and Elijah Alexander of The Chosen as King Nebuchadnezzar.
The filmmakers raised approximately $1.2 million through crowdfunding to help produce the project and have said their goal was to remain closely grounded in Scripture. The movie incorporates material from the Book of Daniel along with passages and themes from Psalms, Isaiah, Habakkuk and Jeremiah.
The story follows Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego as they navigate life in Babylon and face pressure to compromise their faith.
Its top-10 opening gives the independently produced biblical film a measurable foothold in theaters alongside major studio releases.
