Rev. Dal Thawn Tuang served the same Baptist congregation for 22 years before his death in Chin State
A Baptist pastor who served his congregation for more than two decades has been shot and killed in Myanmar’s predominantly Christian Chin State, according to religious-freedom organizations monitoring the region.
The Burma Research Institute and International Christian Concern say Rev. Dal Thawn Tuang, 49, was shot Sept. 14 near the Kapte bridge while returning home after conducting religious ministry in a neighboring village.
Tuang served as assistant pastor of Lamzang Baptist Church for 22 years. He leaves behind a wife and two children.
The Burma Research Institute attributes the shooting to Myanmar’s military. The Tiddim Baptist Convention, which includes Tuang’s church, honored him as a faithful servant in a condolence statement but did not identify those responsible for his death.
International Christian Concern says Tuang is the latest Christian pastor killed amid continuing violence in the region. Religious-freedom advocates are calling on the U.S. government to increase pressure on Myanmar’s military government over attacks affecting Christian communities.
Chin State has experienced extensive fighting and displacement since Myanmar’s military seized power in 2021.
