Historic Winter Storm Stops Travel And Power Across Much Of The U.S.
A massive winter megastorm continues to batter large portions of the United States this week, leaving millions affected by snow, ice, power outages, and travel disruptions.
The sprawling winter system, stretching thousands of miles from the Plains to the East Coast, has already proven deadly. Dozens of storm-related deaths have been confirmed across more than a dozen states as icy roads, extreme cold, and power failures strain communities already pushed to the edge by severe weather.
Hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses remain without electricity, particularly in parts of the South where ice accumulation has complicated restoration efforts. Utility crews are working around the clock, but dangerous conditions have slowed repairs in several states.
Travel has also been heavily impacted. Airports across the country reported thousands of canceled and delayed flights, while snow-covered highways and icy bridges prompted widespread travel warnings from state officials. Even major transportation hubs along the East Coast have faced intermittent shutdowns as freezing temperatures persist.
Meteorologists warn the situation may not be over. Forecast models indicate the potential development of another powerful storm system along the East Coast later this week, raising concerns that already-affected regions could see additional snow, strong winds, and coastal impacts.
