Spotlight on Democrats’ Lavish Spending Counterproposal
Washington D.C. – House Speaker Johnson this morning condemned Senate Democrats for prolonging a 14-day government shutdown, accusing them of prioritizing politics over people. Johnson called these “unserious” demands, contrasting them with a clean, nonpartisan House-passed continuing resolution to keep government funded.
Johnson urged Senate Democrats to pass the clean CR, warning of real impacts like unpaid federal workers and potential flight delays, and criticized Chuck Schumer for blocking progress to appease his party’s radical base.
Speaker Johnson also brought to light the demands by Democrats before they will reopen the government. These demands from the Democrats include:
- $1.5 trillion in new taxpayer-funded spending proposed.
- $200 billion to reverse reforms (Page 57, Section 2141), restoring healthcare benefits for non-citizens.
- $358 billion to make COVID-era Obamacare subsidies permanent without income limits.
- $50 billion cut from rural hospital support.
- $0.5 billion to fund liberal news outlets via Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
- $24.6 million for climate resilience projects in Honduras.
- $13.4 million for civic engagement initiatives in Zimbabwe.
- $3.9 million for LGBTQI+ democracy grants in the Western Balkans.
- $2.9 million for desert locust risk reduction in the Horn of Africa.
- $2 million for feminist democratic organizing in Africa.
