University officials reject heat-related speculation and say there is no indication of suspicious activity.
UC Irvine has confirmed the death of a student Sunday, October 4, and offered support to members of the campus community.
UCI Housing notified Mesa Court residents Sunday evening, according to the campus newspaper New University. The notice said the student’s family had been informed and explained that additional details were being withheld out of respect for their privacy.
University spokesperson Tom Vasich subsequently told New University that information circulating about the death being heat-related was incorrect. He also said there were no indications of suspicious activity.
The university did not disclose a cause of death in that statement.
Housing officials encouraged residents to support one another and seek assistance from resident advisers, residential living coordinators or the Counseling Center liaison. The notice also directed students to their housing office and duty line for additional help.
