Republican candidate criticizes the reported withdrawal as Californians begin voting for their next governor.
Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton said Monday that Democratic opponent Xavier Becerra withdrew from a Los Angeles Times debate planned for Tuesday, October 6.
California Globe reported Hilton’s announcement, which he posted on X. Hilton criticized the reported withdrawal and pointed to Becerra’s earlier commitment to participate in multiple debates.
Becerra pledged in August to debate Hilton more than once before the November 3 election.
The candidates faced each other September 30 in a televised CNN debate in Burbank, discussing affordability, housing, homelessness and immigration. Hilton argued California needs a change in leadership, while Becerra emphasized his government experience and challenged Hilton’s positions.
The reported withdrawal comes as counties begin mailing general-election ballots, giving the debate dispute immediate relevance for voters comparing the candidates.
THRIVE! has not independently confirmed with the Los Angeles Times that both candidates had committed to the October 6 event. An explanation from Becerra’s campaign was not available in the reporting reviewed.
