Why Mamdani Ideology Threatens Freedom, Prosperity, and Christian Values
In New York City’s race for mayor, Zohran Mamdani emerged as a frontrunner out of nowhere and frankly poses a major threat to the American way of life. His reform proposals and ideas sound attractive and even caring or compassionate – free bus fare, universal child care, but they won’t and can’t work. His ideology poses serious risks to liberty, economic stability, and social cohesion. And for that reason, we are encouraging all New Yorkers to get out and vote.
The Core of the Ideology
Mamdani identifies openly as a socialist. He has declared that the “purpose” of his political project is “not simply to raise class consciousness, but to win socialism” and to elect leaders who are “unapologetic about our socialism.” In an interview with Meet the Press in June of 2025, he stated plainly, “I don’t think that we should have billionaires, because, frankly, it is so much money in a moment of such inequality, and ultimately, what we need more of is equality across our city and across our state and across our country.”
His agenda calls for major structural change: state-run grocery stores to compete with private business, a $30 minimum wage, freezing or limiting rents, and higher taxes on the wealthy. His campaigning also ties in with anti-Israel and “global justice” rhetoric, for which he has drawn widespread criticism. Furthermore his far-left socialist platfrom includes decriminalizing all drugs, sex work, abrogating misdemeanors, closing jails, and supporting voting rights for undocumented immigrants.
Why It’s Dangerous
History provides an undeniable verdict: socialism has never worked, and it never will. From the Soviet Union to Venezuela, wherever governments have seized the means of production in the name of equality, the result has been the same—economic collapse, food shortages, loss of freedom, and often, brutal authoritarian control. When the state becomes the provider of everything, it inevitably becomes the controller of everything. What begins as a promise of fairness ends as a system of dependency and fear.
By contrast, free-market capitalism has lifted more people out of poverty than any system in human history. Nations that embrace economic freedom consistently experience greater innovation, prosperity, and opportunity. Capitalism rewards hard work, creativity, and stewardship—principles that align with biblical values of personal responsibility and productive labor (Proverbs 10:4; Colossians 3:23).
Milton Friedman, Nobel Prize–winning economist, said this, “The record of history is absolutely crystal clear: there is no alternative way so far discovered of improving the lot of ordinary people that can hold a candle to the productive activities that are unleashed by a free enterprise system.”
The rhetoric of seizing the means of production, or placing major economic decisions into the hands of the state, has historically led to inefficiencies, scarcity, and loss of freedoms.
Beyond purely economic reform, Mamdani’s campaign aligns with a global-left and anti-establishment narrative. He has been associated with support for movements that call to “globalize the intifada,” a phrase critics say promotes violence against Israel and Jews worldwide. He refuses to unequivocally condemn it and has publicly threatened to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he comes to NY.
Empty Promises
When President Biden’s administration allowed 20 million illegal immigrants to flood our country, most ended up in major cities like NY, Los Angeles, and Chicago. This unplanned population explosion has literally imported ideology from around the world, and most do not align with or adapt to American values. The thought of an easy way out of hard work lures near-sighted first-generation immigrants to be interested in policies that will ultimately hurt people in the end. Promises of free stuff, free food, and free transportation might seem compassionate, but that’s not the role of government, and it never has been. It will do nothing but hurt people in the end and enslave people to government dependence and subsidies. This is not the way that America became the most prosperous country in the world, nor will it sustain America. Those seeking a new life in America need to do it the legal way, then assimilate to American culture, and embrace the American way of life – free markets, free enterprise, and the opportunities are truly unlimited. Socialism and communism have never worked and will never work.
A Call for Discernment
As Christians engaged in the public square, discernment is key. The “Mamdani” ideology presents a mixture of appealing language—equity, justice, reform—but beneath that language are deeper commitments: collectivism, state power, ideological activism, and global radicalism.
Scripture calls believers to create, innovate, uphold truth, love their neighbor, honor civil order, and serve the common good. When an ideology undermines those foundations—even while professing noble ends—it becomes dangerous. As one commentator observed, “People who lived through Russian communism … would never vote for Mamdani.”
We must be alert to the difference between reform-minded politics and movements bent on overturning the moral and civic foundations of liberty, especially in the name of “justice.”
