Fostering The Future” Aims To Modernize Foster Care, Expand Support For Youth Aging Out, & Ensure Religious Families Aren’t Excluded
Washington, DC – President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order last week, “Fostering the Future,” designed to transform the nation’s foster care system — updating outdated technology, expanding support for teens aging out, and protecting religious foster families who have increasingly been sidelined by state policies.
The initiative is led by First Lady Melania Trump and combines federal action with private-sector and faith-based partnerships.
What the Order Does
• Creates a nationwide online platform connecting foster youth to education, housing, and career resources.
• Modernizes child-welfare tech, including AI tools to match children with families.
• Launches an annual State performance scorecard on foster outcomes.
• Expands education and training vouchers and access to tax-credit scholarships.
• Protects faith-based families from discrimination based on religious beliefs.
• Reallocates federal funds to support career readiness, mentorship, and financial literacy.
Alliance Defending Freedom President Kristen Waggoner praised the order, saying it stops officials from “shutting the door on loving parents” because of their beliefs and helps ensure “every precious child has the chance to thrive.” ADF is currently litigating related cases in MA, OR, VT, and WA.
Why This Matters
• 1 in 5 foster youth becomes homeless when they age out.
• Fewer than 5% earn a college degree.
• States are short on foster parents — and religious families are often the first excluded.
• Many foster systems still rely on outdated tech and overwhelmed caseworkers.
This order attempts to tackle all of it at once.
Faith Perspective
Scripture calls believers to defend orphans, welcome the fatherless, and open their homes in love (James 1:27). This order will make it easier and smoother for Christian families to open their doors for families of faith to serve thousands of children, who may encounter the stable love, discipleship, and hope that point them toward Christ.
