This weekend, Franklin Graham, the prominent American evangelist and president of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and Samaritan’s Purse, announced that he had spoken with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. In a heartfelt update shared via X, Graham shared he urged Zelenskyy to call for a national day of prayer, emphasizing the critical need for divine intervention as the war between Ukraine and Russia continues to claim countless lives. Graham’s plea extends beyond Ukraine, encouraging the people of Russia and the global Christian community to unite in prayer for peace.

“So many lives have been lost,” Graham wrote. “President @realDonaldTrump is right—this war must end. We need God’s help.” His message comes at a pivotal moment in the conflict, now in its third year, as diplomatic efforts spearheaded by U.S. President Donald Trump intensify to bring an end to the fighting.

A Call for Unity in Prayer

Graham’s conversation with Zelenskyy shows his belief that only God can bring about true transformation and change in resolving the crisis. He urged the Ukrainian leader to rally his nation in a collective appeal for peace, while also broadening the invitation to include Russia and the worldwide church. “I would encourage this not only for the people of Ukraine, but also for the people of Russia and around the world—that the church of Jesus Christ stand together in prayer for peace,” he stated.

This appeal aligns with Graham’s history of advocating prayer during times of distress. In 2022, he called for global prayers for Ukraine as Russian forces launched their invasion, and his organizations have since provided millions in humanitarian relief to those affected by the conflict. His latest outreach to Zelenskyy highlights the ongoing urgency of the situation, as both military and diplomatic fronts remain tense.

Context of the Ukraine-Russia Conflict

As of March 17, the ceasefire is still pending, despite recent U.S.-led efforts to broker a deal. President Trump has been vocal about his intent to end the conflict, engaging directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin and pushing for negotiations. A proposed 30-day ceasefire, discussed during a meeting between Ukrainian and U.S. delegations in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, earlier this month, has been accepted by Ukraine but met with conditional responses from Moscow. Zelenskyy has emphasized that any peace agreement must include security guarantees for Ukraine, a stance that has complicated talks with Russia.

The human toll of the war remains staggering, with estimates of tens of thousands of Ukrainian and Russian casualties. Cities like Kryvyi Rih and Kherson have faced recent attacks, and the strategic Kursk region—briefly seized by Ukraine in 2024—has seen fierce fighting as Russian forces regain ground. Against this backdrop, Graham’s call for prayer resonates as a plea for a resolution that transcends political and military solutions.

Graham’s Support for Trump’s Peace Efforts

In his X post, Graham endorsed President Trump’s stance that “this war must end.” Trump has framed his approach as a means to prevent further escalation, warning Zelenskyy of the risks of “gambling with world war three” during a contentious Oval Office meeting in February 2025. Graham’s reference to Trump suggests a shared conviction that the conflict’s resolution requires not only human effort but also spiritual support.

Graham’s organizations have maintained a presence in Ukraine throughout the war, offering medical aid, food, and shelter to those displaced by the fighting. His direct appeal to Zelenskyy builds on this foundation, reinforcing his role as both a humanitarian and a faith leader seeking to influence the course of events.

A Broader Appeal for Peace

The war has reverberated far beyond Ukraine’s borders, straining international relations and prompting widespread calls for a lasting peace. European leaders, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, have rallied behind Ukraine, pledging military and logistical support to bolster its position in any potential ceasefire.

Graham’s message arrives as Zelenskyy navigates complex negotiations, balancing Ukraine’s demand for sovereignty with pressure from allies to reach a deal. The evangelist’s urging of a national day of prayer offers a unifying vision, one that seeks to bridge divides through faith at a time when political solutions remain elusive.

Looking Ahead

As the world watches the unfolding diplomatic efforts, Franklin Graham’s call for a national day of prayer serves as a reminder of the human cost of the Ukraine-Russia war and the hope in God alone for a peaceful resolution. Whether Zelenskyy will act on this suggestion remains to be seen.
