Richard Pearson Warns That America May Be Fulfilling the Biblical Prophecies of Babylon the Great
Is America “Babylon the Great” mentioned in the book of Revelation? Many who follow traditional theology are not convinced. As the world spirals further out of control, it’s clear that the end times are upon us. All the signs are there — we just need to unravel the clues and determine America’s role in the end of days.
It’s important to get a firm grasp on what Scripture reveals about this prophetic entity. Latter-day Babylon the Great is a providential nation, raised up by God as a golden cup in His hand. Through her covenant with the Lord, she becomes the richest, most blessed nation in human history. It’s a nation filled with God’s people — yet something shifts. The vast majority turn away from their biblical foundation. Instead of invoking God’s blessings, they rewrite the laws, opening the door to Babylonian spirits and wreaking havoc on the once-blessed community. These spirits pervert the nation’s morals, corrupt its culture and provoke divine judgment. A deep division forms — on one side, those who remain faithful to the covenant, on the other, those who abandon it.
But it is the shedding of innocent blood that ultimately seals the nation’s fate. The golden cup, once overflowing with prosperity, is now filled with blood — defiling the land and triggering God’s final judgment. This judgment doesn’t stop with Babylon. It spreads, unleashing global turmoil — the time of Jacob’s trouble, otherwise known as the tribulation.
Starting to sound familiar?
Throughout history, scholars and theologians have debated the identity of Babylon the Great as described in Revelation. Some believe that in John’s time, Babylon was a code word for Rome, the oppressive empire that persecuted early Christians and was saturated with idolatry, immorality and corruption. The Roman Empire embodied the rebellion against God’s kingdom, standing as a dominant force of wickedness in the first-century world.
It is here, many prophecy enthusiasts believe, that Babylon the Great will rise and be the city of seven hills where the Antichrist will reign over the earth during the tribulation period. They see Babylon the Great as a future global empire, a one-world system that will rise in the last days under the rule of the Antichrist. Revelation 13 speaks of a beast, symbolizing this end-time leader, working hand-in-hand with a false prophet to deceive the nations.
This interpretation points to a coming economic, political and religious power structure that will demand allegiance, leading many away from the truth of God’s Word. In this perspective, Babylon represents a corrupt religious system, a form of apostate Christianity that has compromised with the world, blending truth with deception. This view suggests that Babylon is not just a political force but also a spiritual deception, seducing people into false worship and leading them away from Jesus Christ by embracing ancient Babylonian religious practices.
Finally, many believe Babylon symbolizes the spirit of materialism and greed, where the pursuit of wealth and power replaces devotion to God. Revelation 18 portrays Babylon as a city or population center consumed by luxury, arrogance and self-indulgence — but within her resides the bride of Christ until its sudden destruction. This interpretation warns against putting trust in worldly success instead of living in obedience to the kingdom of God.
This poses the poignant question: Does America meet the biblical criteria for latter-day Babylon the Great? All of these descriptions are clearly fulfilled by this once-great nation. If we assume that America is indeed Babylon the Great, what does that mean for us as American believers?
It means that we are in our Josiah moment — the moment of pause, of respite, before the Lord’s ultimate judgement on our nation and the world. Let’s be clear: judgment, swift and true, is barreling towards our fallen world. In my new book, “America’s Josiah Moment,” I further outline how modern-day America fulfills the biblical description of Babylon the Great, as well as call on Christians to make the most of this clarion call. Now is the time to reignite our fellow Americans for Christ before it’s too late. We already know the time is coming… we just need to make it count.
