A pastor and church worker traveling to Sunday services were among Christians reportedly killed in a series of attacks south of Jos.
A Baptist pastor and church employee were among Christians killed during a series of attacks in Nigeria’s Plateau State over the weekend, according to local residents and Christian persecution monitors.
The pastor and church worker were traveling to Sunday services in the Dorowa Babuje area of Barkin Ladi County when they were killed. The pastor’s son was seriously wounded.
Residents attributed the attacks to armed Fulani militants. Additional Christians were also reported killed in nearby villages during the weekend.
Nigeria’s Middle Belt has endured years of violence involving farming communities, armed herders, criminal groups and Islamist militants. Christian organizations have repeatedly raised concerns about attacks on predominantly Christian communities, while analysts note that the broader conflict also involves land, resources, ethnicity, criminality and weak security.
Open Doors reported that Nigeria accounted for 3,490 of the 4,849 Christians it recorded as killed for their faith worldwide during its latest reporting period.
