The technology giant’s largest AI infrastructure investment in Europe includes a 22-year agreement tied to Finland’s Loviisa nuclear plant.

Google says it will invest at least €13 billion—about $15 billion—across Finland in 2027 and 2028, expanding the physical systems needed to support artificial intelligence. The plans include data-center capacity, grid improvements, battery storage and related clean-energy projects.

A central piece of the announcement is a 22-year power-purchase agreement with Finnish energy company Fortum. The contract could provide Google with as much as half of the output from Fortum’s Loviisa nuclear plant, making it Google’s first nuclear-energy agreement outside the United States.

AI’s growing demand for power

The investment illustrates a less-visible reality of the AI boom: digital services depend on enormous amounts of electricity, land, cooling and transmission capacity. As companies race to build more capable systems, governments and local communities are weighing economic opportunity against questions about energy security, environmental impact and long-term infrastructure costs.

Google estimates its Finland projects could add roughly $3.6 billion to the country’s gross domestic product during construction and support about 7,000 jobs annually once operational. Those figures are company projections, but they show the scale of the undertaking and why Finland sees data infrastructure as an economic-development opportunity.

Why This Matters

AI is often discussed as software, but its consequences are increasingly physical. Choices about how new computing capacity is powered will shape energy markets, local economies and the environmental footprint of the technology for decades.

For more on emerging technology with real-world impact, read THRIVE!’s coverage of an Indian space startup’s new satellite-imaging patent.

THRIVE! Perspective

Innovation and stewardship belong together. Jesus’ instruction to count the cost before building in Luke 14:28 applies naturally to projects whose benefits and obligations will outlast a quarterly earnings cycle. Proverbs 11:1 likewise commends honest measurement—a needed principle when companies describe jobs, growth, energy use and environmental gains.

Christians need not oppose technological ambition to ask responsible questions about whom it serves, what it consumes and whether promised benefits are measured truthfully. Excellence includes building wisely, treating communities fairly and accounting for the full cost of progress.
