Protesters demand accountability as recall effort against Governor Janet Mills gains momentum
A wave of public opposition is growing against Governor Janet Mills, as hundreds of protesters gathered at the Maine State Capitol on Saturday to voice their discontent over her stance on transgender athletes in female sports and her ongoing dispute with former President Donald Trump.
The protest, dubbed the “March Against Mills,” was organized by citizen activist Melissa Moulton and drew a sizable crowd, with many holding signs and waving American flags and “Don’t Tread on Me” banners. The demonstration follows Mills’ public refusal to enforce Trump’s executive order banning transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports, a move that has sparked controversy among Maine residents.
Petition Gaining Momentum
Moulton also spearheaded a petition on Change.org calling for the recall of the Democratic governor. As of Saturday afternoon, the petition had amassed more than 23,000 verified signatures, signaling a growing movement against Mills’ policies.
Videos from the event showed a mix of participants, suggesting that opposition to Mills may not be confined to conservative circles alone.
“Several of her policies contradict the economic growth and prosperity that should be our government’s priority. Example: keeping boys out of female sports,” read a statement from the event organizers, highlighting a key issue driving the movement against the governor.
Protests Continue
The protest comes on the heels of a similar demonstration the previous weekend, where both supporters and opponents of Mills gathered to express their views. While Mills’ allies have defended her stance as a stand, the majority of Mainers argue that prioritizing transgender inclusion over biological realities in sports undermines fairness for female athletes.
Whether the recall effort will gain enough traction to pose a serious challenge to Mills’ leadership remains to be seen, but the growing public dissent signals that Americans have had enough of morally bankrupt leaders. Americans are tired of their elected officials not representing the interests of the vast majority of their citizens.
