The 23-year-old American advanced after a five-set thriller that ended at 3:33 a.m., setting up an all-American semifinal.

Ben Shelton defeated defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in a four-hour, 28-minute U.S. Open quarterfinal that became the latest-finishing match in tournament history.

Shelton prevailed 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(10-7), completing the upset at 3:33 a.m. in New York. The contest repeatedly shifted momentum before Shelton secured the deciding tiebreak against one of the sport’s most accomplished young champions.

An all-American semifinal

The victory sends Shelton into a semifinal against fellow American Frances Tiafoe. It also keeps alive the possibility of the first American men’s Grand Slam singles champion since Andy Roddick won the U.S. Open in 2003.

For Shelton, the match demanded more than shot-making. He had to recover after losing the opening set, maintain composure after Alcaraz forced a fifth and execute under extreme fatigue as the night stretched into early morning.

Why This Matters

The match was a major moment for American tennis and a vivid demonstration of preparation under pressure. Elite sport does not make an athlete morally exemplary, but it can reveal the habits required to perform when physical strength and concentration are nearly spent.

THRIVE! has previously covered another memorable New York triumph: Coco Gauff’s U.S. Open victory and on-court prayer.

THRIVE! Perspective

Shelton’s achievement offers a picture of discipline and endurance.

Paul uses athletic training in 1 Corinthians 9:24–25 to illustrate purposeful self-control, while Hebrews 12:1 calls believers to run with endurance. The spiritual application is not that winning proves virtue; it is that worthy callings require preparation, perseverance, and the resolve to keep going when the outcome remains uncertain.
