The deployment will expand President Trump’s military options as negotiations with Iran remain stalled.
The United States is sending the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group and USS Makin Island amphibious group to the Middle East, adding approximately 9,000 sailors and Marines, according to reporting by the Associated Press and The Wall Street Journal.
The deployment could place three American aircraft carriers in the region. The USS George H.W. Bush and USS George Washington are already operating there.
President Trump said in a Time interview published October 1 that additional strikes against Iran were possible after the November elections. He said he rejected Iran’s latest ceasefire proposal because its terms were insufficient.
The naval buildup includes aircraft, Marines and amphibious ships capable of supporting a range of operations. Deployment reports have offered different arrival estimates, and the Pentagon has not publicly detailed a final operational timetable.
The movement does not establish that President Trump has ordered a new offensive. It provides additional military capacity while the administration considers its next steps.
