Thirty bodies recovered from the burned-out MV June Aster sharply increase the toll as families await answers

PALAWAN, Philippines — Rescuers recovered 30 bodies from the burned-out passenger ferry MV June Aster on Friday, raising the confirmed death toll from five to 35, according to authorities.

Officials now report 54 people missing and 43 survivors. Those figures account for the 132 people believed to have been aboard after two passengers listed on the 134-person manifest said they never boarded.

Rescuers enter the ferry

Firefighters recovered the remains after they were finally able to enter the vessel. Thick smoke and extreme heat had prevented crews from gaining access after the fire erupted Wednesday night as the ferry neared Coron in the western province of Palawan.

The ship had traveled from Manila on a journey of more than 20 hours. Video released by the Philippine Coast Guard showed responders in protective suits transferring body bags from a smaller boat to a Coast Guard vessel.

The recovery raises the official death toll sevenfold and leaves open the possibility that it could rise further as the search continues.

Cause remains unknown

Authorities have not determined what caused the fire. Survivors described hearing explosions before flames spread rapidly, but those accounts have not established an official cause.

Investigators will face urgent questions about how the blaze began, how quickly passengers were warned and whether everyone aboard had a safe opportunity to evacuate. Families awaiting news have also expressed frustration about the limited information available as recovery and identification work continues.

THRIVE! Perspective

Each victim is more than a number—a person bearing God-given dignity, loved by family and known by name. This tragedy calls for prayer for the grieving, compassion for those still waiting and strength for rescuers carrying out painful work.

It also requires a transparent investigation that follows the evidence, holds responsible parties accountable where warranted and produces stronger maritime safeguards. Human life must remain the first priority.
