CMS expects most direct deposits around October 8; Medicare Advantage beneficiaries are excluded.
President Trump has announced a one-time $90 payment for approximately 20.8 million Medicare beneficiaries, with federal officials saying most eligible recipients should receive a direct deposit on or around October 8.
The payment applies to qualifying people living in the United States who are enrolled in Original Medicare Part B. People enrolled in Medicare Advantage, those receiving Medicaid assistance with their premiums, and those paying income-related premium surcharges are excluded, according to federal guidance.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services said recipients without direct deposit will receive Treasury checks later in October at their addresses on file.
The administration says the payments will help offset October premiums and make coverage more affordable. Funding comes from the Medicare Improvement Fund, which Congress established in 2008.
The announcement also drew political criticism ahead of November’s elections. Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., criticized it as an election-season political maneuver.
CMS describes the rebate as a single payment, rather than an ongoing monthly benefit.
Beneficiaries can check eligibility by calling 1-800-MEDICARE. CMS says questions about payment status should be directed to the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 beginning October 15.
