Australia is proposing a new level of transparency for social media: platforms would have to tell users when algorithms shape their feeds and offer a way to opt out.

The Australian government unveiled proposed legislation Tuesday that would require social media companies to give new and existing users a choice over their default feeds.

Under the “My Feed, My Way” initiative, Australians could continue receiving algorithmically personalized content or choose a feed centered on the people and creators they intentionally follow. The proposal has not yet become law and is expected to move through consultation before being introduced to Parliament.

Restoring Choice to the User

Social platforms use recommendation systems to predict which posts will keep people watching, clicking and scrolling. Those systems can help users discover relevant material, but they can also amplify sensational content, narrow a person’s view of the world and make compulsive engagement harder to resist.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the proposal as giving control to users rather than to government. The broader draft framework would also impose a digital duty of care on platforms, including protections for children from harmful material.

THRIVE! Perspective: Steward Attention, Protect Freedom

Biblical reflection: Romans 12:2 calls Christians to resist conformity and pursue a renewed mind. Greater choice over a feed can support intentional habits, but a platform setting cannot provide discernment for us. We should welcome meaningful user control while examining whether enforcement protects legitimate expression and preserves responsibility within families.

The proposal addresses a basic question of digital life: Who should decide what receives our attention?

Technology is most helpful when it serves people rather than quietly shaping their desires. For families, churches and individuals, the legislation also provides an opportunity to examine habits that no regulation can fully govern. An opt-out button cannot replace wisdom, self-control or intentional choices about what enters a home and captures a mind.

Critics will continue debating enforcement and free-expression concerns as the bill develops. But the principle that users deserve meaningful knowledge and choice over automated systems is likely to resonate well beyond Australia.
