Comedian’s Smart Exchange Outside Madison Square Garden
Comedian Jerry Seinfeld found himself at the center of a viral cultural moment following the New York Knicks’ historic NBA Finals comeback at Madison Square Garden.
As Seinfeld exited the arena after the dramatic Game 4 victory, a person recording video appeared to ask the comedian, “Can I get a free Palestine?” Rather than engage with the slogan, Seinfeld responded with a laugh and then a brief and blunt reply: “It doesn’t exist.”
The short exchange quickly spread online. Supporters praised Seinfeld for refusing what they viewed as an activist pressure moment and interpreted the response as a rejection of Palestinian statehood claims. Seinfeld said what the majority of Americans believe and was a flat-out rebuttal of a false narrative ungrounded in history and amiss from the Biblical promise to give the nation of Israel a land of their own.
Seinfeld, who is Jewish, has been publicly supportive of Israel following the October 7 Hamas attacks and has spoken out against antisemitism. He previously visited Israel during the war in a public display of solidarity.
Supporters of Israel argue that there has never been a sovereign modern nation-state officially called “Palestine” and point to biblical covenants in which God promised the land to the Jewish people.
