‘Empty and Lawless’ Cases Dismissed
In a major legal development, Special Counsel Jack Smith has requested that all charges against President-elect Donald Trump stemming from the January 6 Capitol breach investigation be dismissed. Smith filed a motion for dismissal today marking an end to a political witchhunt against 45th and now 47th President of the US. The dismissal awaits approval from Judge Tanya Chutkan.
The decision marks a significant shift in the Justice Department’s high-profile pursuit of Trump, which has been a central issue of political contention over the past few years and one that the American people spoke loud and clear about in their actions at the poll on November 5.
Trump’s Reaction
Trump, reacted to the news on Truth Social calling the cases a complete waste of taxpayer dollars, adding up over $100MM spent on the lawfare.
“These cases, like all of the other cases I have been forced to go through, are empty and lawless, and should never have been brought. Over $100 Million Dollars of Taxpayer Dollars has been wasted in the Democrat Party’s fight against their Political Opponent, ME. Nothing like this has ever happened in our Country before,” he wrote.
The President-elect also criticized the use of state prosecutors, specifically naming Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, Letitia James of New York, and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. He alleged political motives behind their actions, accusing them of targeting him to further their careers and campaign platforms.
Other Legal Developments
This request for dismissal is not the only legal victory for Trump in recent months. Smith also filed a motion to drop his appeal in the classified records case, which had been dismissed by federal Judge Aileen Cannon in July. Judge Cannon ruled that Smith’s appointment as special counsel was unlawful, delivering another setback to the investigation.
While critics have often viewed these investigations as essential for accountability, Trump and his supporters have consistently framed them as politically motivated attacks, especially with the timing of them coming on the heels of his reflection bid.
Implications
Once Judge Chutkan approves the dismissal, it will conclude a season of lawfare against the former and President-Elect by his political opponents with Trump again coming out victorious.
