State Leaders Urge Residents to Unite in Faith Amidst Crises

In a bold move reflecting deep concerns about the challenges facing the state and nation, the Tennessee General Assembly has passed House Joint Resolution 803, declaring July as a month of prayer and fasting. Introduced by Representative Fritts, the resolution calls on Tennesseans to seek divine intervention and healing for the state’s myriad issues.

Addressing State and National Crises

The resolution outlines a litany of crises plaguing both Tennessee and the United States, including:

    • Violence committed by both citizens and non-citizens

    • Unacceptable levels of violent crime in schools

    • The pervasive evil of human trafficking

    • Overwhelming drug addiction and the deadly impact of fentanyl

    • The devastation caused by drunk driving

    • The alarming number of children in foster care

    • Corruption in the federal government

These pressing issues have prompted the General Assembly to turn to faith, invoking the traditions that have long underpinned American governance.

Historical Precedent and Spiritual Urgency

HJR 803 draws on historical precedents, citing a 1799 proclamation by President John Adams that called for a national day of “solemn humiliation, fasting, and prayer.” The resolution underscores the belief that true national healing requires a return to God through Jesus Christ, echoing the biblical sentiment that “righteousness exalteth a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 14:34).

The resolution reads, “Except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain” (Psalm 127:1), emphasizing the conviction that divine intervention is essential for overcoming the state’s current tribulations.

A Call to Action for All Tennesseans

From July 1 to July 31, 2024, Tennesseans are encouraged to engage in prayer and intermittent fasting. The resolution acknowledges that not all may be physically able or spiritually inclined to participate fully but calls upon those who can to join in this collective act of faith.

The General Assembly explicitly seeks God’s mercy upon the state, asking for forgiveness for collective sins and shortcomings and calling for the healing of the land. The resolution also petitions for the Holy Spirit to fill every aspect of public and private life in Tennessee with peace, love, and joy.

A United Effort for Divine Intervention

As Tennessee embarks on this month-long spiritual endeavor, the General Assembly hopes that through collective prayer and fasting, the state will experience a transformation. This joint resolution is a testament to the power of faith and unity in the face of adversity.

For more information and to join in this month of prayer and fasting, visit the official website of the Tennessee General Assembly or follow updates on social media with the hashtag #TNPrayerAndFastingJuly.

Thrive News will continue to cover this developing story and provide updates on how Tennesseans are participating in this statewide call to faith.
