A new Reuters/Ipsos poll finds broad public concern about AI safety and limited confidence in technology companies regulating themselves.
Safety concerns rise
Seventy-three percent of Americans say artificial intelligence companies are not doing enough to prevent serious harm to society, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted this month.
The survey also found 39% of respondents believe AI is having a negative effect on society, the highest share since Reuters/Ipsos began asking the question in March. Eleven percent said AI is having a positive effect.
Americans favor a slower approach
Fifty-five percent said slowing AI development would be a good thing, compared with 13% who said it would be bad. Another 73% said ensuring AI is developed safely and responsibly is more important than keeping the United States ahead of other countries in AI development.
Supporters of rapid AI development point to potential gains in productivity, scientific research, medicine and other industries. The poll was conducted online among 1,277 U.S. adults and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
