Richard Dawkins says he’s become a ‘cultural Christian’
Renowned atheist and evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins has sparked intrigue by labeling himself a ‘cultural Christian,’ prompted by the absence of Easter festivities in London, where Ramadan celebrations took center stage instead.
In an interview with LBC, Dawkins expressed surprise, stating, “I must say I’m slightly horrified to hear that Ramadan is being promoted instead. I feel that we are a Christian country,” as reported by Fox News.
Despite his skepticism about the veracity of the Bible, Dawkins is adamant that no other faith can adequately substitute for fostering an ideal societal framework. “It’s true that statistically, the number of people who actually believe in Christianity is going down and I’m happy with that, but I would not be happy if, for example, we lost all our cathedrals and our beautiful parish churches. So, I count myself a cultural Christian,” Dawkins explained.
Christianity has woven a societal fabric that Dawkins appreciates
He clarified that while he doesn’t hold Christian beliefs and rejects its tenets entirely, he appreciates the societal fabric woven by Christianity, feeling a sense of belonging within it. He also expressed a preference for Christianity over Islam, citing what he perceives as hostile doctrines within Islam.
Dawkins’ remarks coincide with the White House‘s initial plans for an iftar Ramadan dinner and the Biden Administration’s emphasis on the “Transgender Day of Visibility” during Easter, sparking outrage across the nation.
