The Oscar-winning actor steps into a new role as a minister after a heartfelt baptism at a Harlem church, reflecting on faith and a long-awaited prophecy

Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington has embraced a new chapter in his life, taking a significant step in his faith journey just days before his 70th birthday. Washington, celebrated for his roles in films like Training Day and currently appearing in Gladiator II, was baptized in a heartfelt ceremony at the Kelly Temple Church of God in Christ in Harlem, New York.

The event, held on a recent Saturday, was livestreamed on Facebook, allowing fans and well-wishers worldwide to witness the moving ceremony. Washington, donned in a white robe, was fully immersed in the church’s ritual pool, a tradition within the Pentecostal Church of God in Christ denomination. As he emerged from the water, the congregation celebrated this pivotal moment in his life.

The Sky Is the Limit

After his baptism, Washington shared with the congregation his thoughts and faith saying, “The sky literally is the limit and there’s no limit to the sky. God is good all the time. God is with us when we’re not with him, he’s for us when we’re not for him, he watches us when we don’t watch him, he protects us when we don’t protect ourselves, and gives to us when we don’t deserve it,” said Washington, sharing his heartfelt faith with the congregation.

Reflecting on his journey, Washington addressed the congregation, saying, “It took a while, but I’m here.” He shared a profound memory from his youth, recounting an encounter at his mother’s beauty parlor when he was just 20 years old. A woman named Ruth Green prophesied over his life, telling him, “Boy, you are going to travel the world and preach to millions of people.”

Time of Fulfillment

Decades later, that word is coming to pass as Washington continues to intertwine his faith with his public life. “If God can do this for me, there’s nothing he can’t do for you,” he said at the baptism service, referencing the fulfillment of a 50-year-old prophecy he received while at his mother’s beauty parlor.

The prophecy by Ms. Greene stated he would travel the world and preach to millions of people. During the service, Washington was also presented with a minister’s license, granting him the authority to officiate minor religious ceremonies such as weddings. This milestone lays the groundwork for potential ordination in the future, signaling his deepening commitment to his spiritual calling.

Faith in Hollywood

Washington’s faith journey has been a recurring theme in his life and career. He has often spoken openly about his belief in God, despite the secular tendencies of Hollywood. In previous interviews, he acknowledged the challenges of discussing faith in his industry, saying, “It’s not talked about in this town, but that doesn’t mean people in Hollywood don’t believe.” His public baptism and licensing as a minister further cement his role as a beacon of faith in an often skeptical industry.

With his milestone 70th birthday approaching on December 28, this moment signifies more than just a personal victory. It serves as an inspiring reminder of the power of faith, perseverance, and the courage to embrace a calling, no matter how long it takes to arrive.
