News organizations challenge the administration’s decision to revoke their White House credentials
CNN, MS NOW and Politico filed a federal lawsuit Monday challenging the Trump administration’s decision to block their reporters from White House grounds.
The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Washington, argues that revoking the organizations’ press credentials violated First Amendment and due-process protections.
The three organizations contend that the restrictions were imposed in retaliation for news coverage the administration disliked and are seeking an emergency court order restoring their access.
President Trump has defended the decision, repeatedly criticizing the organizations for what he describes as false or inaccurate reporting and arguing that certain reporting can present national-security concerns.
The lawsuit sets up another legal battle over the relationship between the White House and the press and over how much authority an administration has to determine which news organizations receive access to White House facilities.
The Associated Press and the White House Correspondents’ Association have also criticized the restrictions.
