New statewide survey measures voter priorities ahead of November election
California’s high cost of living is the concern most frequently cited by likely voters heading into the Nov. 3 election, according to a new UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies poll co-sponsored by the Los Angeles Times.
Forty-four percent of likely voters surveyed named cost of living as one of their top concerns. The poll measured Democrat Xavier Becerra at 58% and Republican Steve Hilton at 33%, with 9% undecided.
The candidates have emphasized different approaches to affordability. Hilton has campaigned on reducing taxes, regulations, gasoline prices and energy costs. Becerra has emphasized lowering costs for working families while also making opposition to Trump administration policies a central part of his campaign.
The survey included 4,512 likely voters interviewed Sept. 15–20. The reported margin of error for the likely-voter sample was approximately plus or minus two percentage points.
