Trump Slams MSNBC Hosts for ‘Disgraceful’ Jab at Cancer Survivor’s Moment of Glory

MSNBC hosts Nicolle Wallace and Rachel Maddow stooped to a new low this week over comments they made about Devarjaye “DJ” Daniel, the 13-year-old brain cancer survivor honored during Trump’s Tuesday night joint address to Congress. The two liberal commentators and MSNBC are now facing mounting pressure and calls for their resignation.

The controversy stems from Tuesday night’s broadcast of The Rachel Maddow Show, where Wallace and Maddow critiqued Trump’s decision to spotlight DJ Daniel, a young boy battling a rare form of brain and spine cancer since 2018. During the address, Trump surprised Daniel—an aspiring police officer—by making him an honorary Secret Service agent, a moment that drew cheers and chants of “DJ! DJ!” from the congressional gallery. For many, it was a heartwarming highlight of the night and an incredible story of triumph over tragedy.

Disgraceful Commentary

But Wallace and Maddow saw it differently. Wallace, reflecting on the moment, initially expressed a glimmer of positivity: “I let myself feel joy about DJ, and I hope he’s alive for another, you know, 95 years, and I hope he lives the life he wants to live. He wants to be a cop. He knows what he wants to do, and maybe when you have childhood cancer, that crystallizes for you.” Her tone shifted, however, as she continued: “I hope he has a long life as a law enforcement officer. But I hope he never has to defend the United States Capitol against Donald Trump’s supporters, and if he does, I hope he isn’t one of the six who loses his life to suicide, and I hope he isn’t one who has to testify against the people who carried out acts of seditious conspiracy and then lived to see Donald Trump pardon those people.”

The remarks, which tied Daniel’s story to the January 6 Capitol riot and its aftermath, sparked immediate outrage. Critics accused Wallace of politicizing a child’s personal triumph, with some calling her comments “vile” and “shameful.” Maddow, meanwhile, labeled Trump’s gesture “disgusting,” arguing it was a political stunt exploiting Daniel’s illness. The backlash was swift, amplified by social media and conservative outlets, and even caught the attention of DJ’s father, Theodis Daniel, who told The New York Post, “She needs to shut her mouth if she has nothing nice to say.”

No Moral Clarity

President Trump was asked about the controversy during a Q&A session with reporters on Thursday, March 6, 2025. Asked whether Democrats were “out of touch” following polls showing broad approval of his speech, Trump didn’t hold back. “I thought it was very embarrassing for the Democrats, what happened the other night,” he said, per Fox News. “Even CNN ‘Fake News’ said that. They came out and said it. And worse than CNN is ‘MS-DNC,’ which is the worst. And the good news is very few people watch them anymore. They’ve lost such credibility.”

I will tell you what she said the other day about the young man is disgraceful. She should be forced to resign. – President Trump

Turning his focus to Wallace and Maddow, Trump again told it like it is: “Frankly, what Nicolle Wallace said—I’ve never been a fan of hers, and she’s not very talented, but I will tell you what she said the other day about the young man is disgraceful. She should be forced to resign. And Rachel Maddow should be forced to resign. Nobody watches her anyway. I don’t know—it’s not possible they pay her as much money as I hear. But certainly she’s lost all credibility, both of them. But what they said the other day, they should be forced to resign about that young person, who is suffering greatly.”

Network & Show Struggles

The president’s call for their ouster has fueled an already growing momentum online as the network struggles with total loss of credibility and viewers along with it. Supporters argue that Wallace and Maddow crossed a line by dragging a child into their anti-Trump rhetoric, pointing to the emotional toll such remarks could take on a family already grappling with a dire medical battle. Detractors, however, defend the hosts’ right to critique Trump’s actions, framing the honorary title as a calculated move to score political points rather than a genuine act of goodwill.

MSNBC has yet to respond officially, and neither Wallace nor Maddow addressed the backlash directly during their Thursday broadcasts. The silence has only intensified calls for accountability, with some questioning whether the network’s liberal leanings have blinded it to basic decency. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt piled on earlier in the week, accusing Wallace of “disgustingly” exploiting Daniel’s story to attack Trump over January 6.

Beneath the political sparring lies a deeper tension: how far is too far when it comes to public commentary? Wallace’s invocation of suicide—a reference to officers who took their lives after the Capitol riot—struck many as a cheap shot, especially given Daniel’s age and vulnerability. Yet her defenders might argue it was a pointed critique of Trump’s legacy, not the boy himself. Maddow’s charge of exploitation, too, raises valid questions about the optics of such gestures, though her delivery has been widely panned as tone-deaf.

For DJ Daniel and his family, the moment was supposed to be a celebration. In a video shared by the White House, the teen thanked Trump, saying, “If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here today.” His father, a former Navy machinist, described meeting Trump and sitting near figures like Elon Musk and the First Lady as a surreal honor. That joy, however, has been overshadowed by a media firestorm they likely never anticipated.

As of now, it’s unclear whether MSNBC will take action or if Wallace and Maddow will weather the storm.
