Earlier this year, on January 27, Trump issued the Executive Order directing the full-scale construction and deployment of the missile shield, which he described in his March 4 address to Congress as the “Golden Dome.”
“I’m asking Congress to fund a state-of-the-art Golden Dome missile defense shield to protect our homeland… All made in the USA,” Trump said in his national address.
“Ronald Reagan wanted to do it long ago, but the technology just wasn’t there, not even close. But now we have the technology. It’s incredible, actually… Israel has it. Other places have it. And the United States should have it too.”
Trump is framing the initiative as the ultimate fulfillment of his long-held promise to put America first, not only through strong borders and economic policies, but by ensuring every American family is defended from foreign aggression.
Next-Generation Defense
According to the White House, Trump’s plan includes the following:
- Accelerate the development of Hypersonic and Ballistic Tracking Space Sensor Layers
- Deploy space-based interceptors and a Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture
- Develop non-kinetic missile defense capabilities (e.g., directed energy)
- Defeat missile salvos prior to launch through enhanced detection
- Modernize underlayer and terminal-phase intercept systems
- Secure U.S.-based defense supply chains
- Review and upgrade theater missile defense for troops abroad
- Increase missile defense cooperation with U.S. allies
The plan is intended to move the U.S. beyond outdated Cold War defense policies and into a fully integrated, 21st-century strategic deterrent.
“I will direct our military to begin construction of the great Iron Dome missile defense shield, which will be made all in the USA,” Trump promised.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth emphasized the administration’s urgency during remarks at the U.S. Army War College:
“We are rapidly moving ahead on one of the president’s key campaign promises, which is a Golden Dome for America—a nationwide missile defense system to protect Americans from the threat of nuclear, hypersonic and conventional weapons here in our homeland.”
Hegseth has echoed Trump’s view that peace through strength is the only deterrent to emboldened adversaries.
