The Executive Order, titled “Protecting the Integrity of American Elections,” mandates proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration, aligning federal forms with stricter eligibility checks. Agencies like the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Social Security Administration, and Department of State will now provide states access to federal databases to confirm citizenship status. States failing to comply risk losing federal election funding, a measure designed to enforce uniformity and accountability nationwide.
Making Elections Honest Again
“This is about making elections honorable and honest again,” President Trump said. “People deserve to know their vote counts. We’re going to have free and fair elections—ideally with paper ballots, same-day voting, proof of citizenship, and voter ID. Very simple.”
The order also cracks down on non-citizen voting, directing the Attorney General to prioritize prosecutions using DHS records and collaborate with state authorities. Foreign nationals will be barred from administering elections, and existing laws prohibiting their financial influence in U.S. campaigns will see heightened enforcement.
In a nod to election security, the order updates the Voluntary Voting System Guidelines 2.0, requiring voter-verifiable paper ballots and banning the use of barcodes or QR codes in vote tabulation. Critics of past election practices will note the order’s reversal of Biden-era policies.
