The Former California Governor Opens Up About the Legal Immigrant Journey & Honoring the United States
In a passionate and personal interview on The View, actor, former California governor, and longtime immigrant advocate Arnold Schwarzenegger spoke about his deep appreciation for the United States and the responsibility immigrants have to give back to their adopted homeland.
“You said I’m an immigrant—I’m so proud and happy that I was embraced by the American people like that,” Schwarzenegger said. “Imagine, I came over here at the age of 21 with absolutely nothing.”
Reflecting on his storied career—from bodybuilding fame to Hollywood stardom, and later to political office as California’s Republican governor—Schwarzenegger credited the American dream for every opportunity he’s experienced.
“In no other country in the world could you do that,” he said. “My bodybuilding career, my acting career, becoming governor, the beautiful family I’ve created—all of this is because of America.”
Schwarzenegger’s comments come at a time when immigration policy continues to be a national flashpoint, especially amid heated debate over ICE enforcement and the U.S. southern border.
While he acknowledged the importance of America’s welcoming spirit, he also stressed the need for immigrants to follow the law and honor the privilege of being in the country.
“When you come to America, you’re a guest,” Schwarzenegger explained. “You have to behave like a guest. When I go to someone’s house, I clean up, I make my bed, I do everything right.”
He added that breaking the law or being abusive “doesn’t work in this country,” and called on newcomers to pursue education, jobs, and family life while contributing to the community in return.
“If I get all of those things from America, then I have to give something back,” he said. “You have a responsibility as an immigrant to give back—whether it’s after-school programs, Special Olympics, or whatever it is—make this country a better place.”
Schwarzenegger also announced that he has been invited to deliver the keynote address this July 4th at George Washington’s historic Mount Vernon estate in celebration of America’s 250th anniversary. Thousands are expected to attend, including a group of new citizens who will be sworn in during the event.
“This is what it’s all about,” he said, beaming. “To celebrate people becoming Americans, coming to America—and doing it the right way.”
