Top 24 Contestants and Star Guests Deliver Powerful Gospel Performances in Historic Easter Episode

On Easter Sunday, April 20, American Idol transformed its prime-time stage into a vibrant celebration of faith, focusing unapologetically on Jesus Christ during a three-hour “Songs of Faith” special. This marked the first time in the show’s 23-season history that an entire episode was dedicated to faith-based performances, blending gospel and worship music with the competitive spirit of the Top 24 contestants. The episode, aired live on ABC, featured powerful performances from contestants, judges, and renowned Christian artists, resonating with millions of viewers and sparking both praise and debate.

A Night of Worship on National Television

The “Songs of Faith” special opened with judge Lionel Richie performing his 2009 inspirational song “Eternity,” backed by the Top 24 contestants as a choir, setting a reverent tone for the evening. Fellow judge Luke Bryan delivered a heartfelt rendition of his 2024 song “Jesus ‘Bout My Kids,” reflecting on the role of faith in parenting. Carrie Underwood, a former Idol winner and first-time judge, closed the night with a breathtaking performance of the classic hymn “How Great Thou Art,” a song she has performed for over a decade, earning widespread acclaim for its emotional depth.

The Top 24 contestants, competing for a spot in the Top 20, performed a mix of gospel, worship, and faith-inspired songs. Standout performances included 17-year-old Canaan James Hill, an aspiring preacher, who brought the audience to its feet with a soulful rendition of Le’Andria Johnson’s “Better Days.” Kolbi Jordan, a 26-year-old from Tulsa, Oklahoma, delivered a triumphant version of “Amazing Grace,” which judge Lionel Richie described as turning the Idol stage into the “church of American Idol.” Other contestants, like Baylee Littrell, son of Backstreet Boys’ Brian Littrell, sang originals and covers that highlighted their personal faith, such as Littrell’s “Hey Jesus.”

Star-Studded Guest Performances

The episode was elevated by guest appearances from prominent Christian artists. Seventeen-time Grammy winner CeCe Winans joined Idol alum Roman Collins for a moving performance of “Come Jesus Come,” while five-time Grammy winner Brandon Lake teamed up with Idol’s artist-in-residence, Grammy-nominated Jelly Roll, for their hit “Hard Fought Hallelujah.” The gospel quartet The Brown Four also performed, showcasing tight harmonies that added to the night’s spiritual atmosphere. These performances underscored the growing mainstream appeal of Christian music, with Lake announcing his upcoming album King of Hearts set for release in June 2025.

Carrie Underwood’s Influence and a Shifting Tide

The “Songs of Faith” special was a bold departure from American Idol’s historically secular approach. Simon Lythgoe, the show’s co-creator, noted that during its early years on Fox, there was an unspoken rule to avoid overtly religious content to maintain broad appeal. However, he credited Carrie Underwood with helping shift this perspective. Underwood, whose faith has been a cornerstone of her career since her 2005 Idol win and hits like “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” reportedly advocated strongly for the Easter special. A source close to production told The U.S. Sun that Underwood pushed for the episode despite some crew members’ concerns about its religious focus, viewing it as a way to openly celebrate her beliefs in an industry where she has faced challenges expressing her faith.

Luke Bryan also praised Underwood’s influence, noting that her presence as a judge inspired a noticeable increase in gospel and faith-based performances this season. Contestants like Breanna Nix and Rylie O’Neill, who performed Brandon Lake’s “Gratitude” during auditions, exemplified this trend, earning emotional responses from Underwood for their courage in bringing faith to the Idol stage.

Mixed Reactions and Cultural Impact

The episode stirred a range of reactions. Many viewers and Christian media outlets, such as CBN News and CCM Magazine, hailed it as a historic moment, with viewers calling it a “beautiful testament of faith” and noting that Underwood’s performance of “How Great Thou Art” garnered 1.5 million YouTube views shortly after airing. Simon Lythgoe expressed excitement about Jesus’ resurrection being honored on a major entertainment platform, a sentiment echoed by CeCe Winans, who described the experience as an honor to “lift up the name of Jesus.”

A Milestone for Faith in Pop Culture

The “Songs of Faith” special reflects a broader cultural resurgence of faith-driven content, from the success of The Chosen to films like King of Kings. American Idol’s decision to dedicate an entire episode to Christian music, backed by Disney and ABC, signals a growing acceptance of spiritual themes in mainstream entertainment. The episode not only showcased the talents of the Top 24 but also highlighted the enduring power of faith to unite and inspire, even in a competitive setting.

As the competition continues, with the Top 14 revealed on April 21, 2025, the Easter special stands as a landmark moment for American Idol, blending faith, music, and storytelling in a way that left an indelible mark on Season 23. Fans can watch American Idol Sundays and Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC, with voting available at idolvote.abc.com or via text to 21523.
